Responsible Gambling

Gambling should be entertaining, not stressful. If it stops being fun, it's time to step back. Here are the tools, resources, and support services available to Canadian players.

Our commitment to player safety

At Bankroll Bob, responsible gambling is not an afterthought — it's built into everything we do. Every casino we review is assessed on the responsible gambling tools it offers, and we rate casinos lower when those tools are missing or hard to find.

We believe players deserve honest information about the risks involved in gambling, clear access to self-management tools, and straightforward paths to support if they need it.

Gambling involves real money and real risk. No strategy, system, or bonus eliminates the house edge. We say this plainly because too many sites don't.

Warning signs of problem gambling

If any of these apply to you or someone you know, it may be time to seek support:

  • Spending more money or time gambling than you intended
  • Chasing losses — increasing bets to try to win back what you've lost
  • Borrowing money or selling possessions to fund gambling
  • Feeling anxious, irritable, or restless when not gambling
  • Lying to family or friends about how much you gamble
  • Neglecting work, relationships, or responsibilities because of gambling
  • Gambling to escape stress, depression, or other problems
  • Feeling unable to stop or cut back despite wanting to

If you recognise these signs, you are not alone. Free, confidential support is available across Canada.

Responsible gambling tools at online casinos

Most reputable online casinos offer tools to help you stay in control. We check for these in every review:

Deposit Limits Set a maximum amount you can deposit per day, week, or month. Once the limit is reached, you cannot deposit more until the period resets. This is the single most effective tool for staying within your budget.

Loss Limits Cap the amount you can lose in a given period. Not all casinos offer this — we flag it when they don't.

Session Time Limits Set a timer that alerts you or logs you out after a set period of play. Useful for preventing long, unplanned sessions.

Cooling-Off Periods Temporarily block yourself from your account for a set period (usually 24 hours to 30 days). Your account and balance remain intact — you just can't access them until the period ends.

Self-Exclusion A longer-term block, typically 6 months to 5 years, or permanent. Once activated, the casino is required to close your account and prevent you from reopening it. This is the most serious step and is difficult to reverse — by design.

Reality Checks Pop-up notifications that tell you how long you've been playing and how much you've spent. Simple but effective.

Practical tips for responsible play

  • Set a budget before you start. Decide how much you can afford to lose — not win — and stop when you reach it.
  • Never chase losses. If you've lost your budget, walk away. Tomorrow is another day.
  • Don't gamble when emotional. Stress, anger, sadness, or alcohol impair your judgement. Play when you're clear-headed.
  • Take breaks. Set a timer. Step away regularly. Gambling should fit into your life, not dominate it.
  • Keep gambling separate from income. Never gamble with money you need for rent, bills, or essentials.
  • Know the odds. The house always has an edge. Bonuses don't change this. No strategy guarantees a win.
  • Use the tools. Set deposit limits. Use session timers. These tools exist because they work.

Legal gambling age in Canada

The legal gambling age varies by province:

19+ provinces: Ontario, British Columbia, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland and Labrador, Yukon, Northwest Territories, Nunavut

18+ provinces: Alberta, Manitoba, Quebec

All casinos reviewed on Bankroll Bob are restricted to players who meet the legal age requirement in their province. We include age restriction notices on every review page.

How we assess casinos on responsible gambling

Responsible gambling is one of our seven rating categories for every casino review. We score casinos on:

  • Availability of deposit, loss, and session limits
  • Self-exclusion options and how easy they are to activate
  • Whether tools are prominently displayed or buried in settings
  • Cooling-off period availability
  • Links to external support resources
  • Overall approach to player protection

Casinos that lack basic tools or make them difficult to find receive lower scores. We believe this is one of the most important factors when choosing where to play.

Gambling involves risk

You may lose some or all of the money you deposit. Only gamble with money you can afford to lose. If gambling is causing you problems, contact ConnexOntario at 1-866-531-2600 or visit connexontario.ca for free, confidential support.

Bankroll Bob is an independent review site. We earn commissions through affiliate partnerships, but this does not influence our ratings or recommendations. All content is intended for adults who meet the legal gambling age in their province.
